With a degree in Biology from the University of Salamanca, and another in Oenology from the University of Valladolid; Marilena has been Bodegas Protos since 2014.
Her trajectory in Protos started in 2005, where she worked side by side with Protos’ last technical director, Carlos Guzman. In 2009 she developed the department of oenoturism, making Protos, the most visited winery in Ribera del Duero.
Presently Marilena coordinates and leads a team of 9 oenologists distributed across the group’s 5 wineries (4 in Ribera del Duero and 1 in Rueda), and oversees the team in charge of the vineyards.
Since her arrival, Marilena has led several R&D projects, following the group philosophy of “constant improvement with the sole aim of elaborating the best wine”. Some of the studies have been on Tinta del País grape, streamlining its elaboration process and planting techniques; Studies on barrel characterization that have helped its impact and contribution in the wine’s taste; and the last, was a profound study on the vineyards` autochthonous yeasts that has helped increase our knowledge on how they help the wine express its own characteristics of grape variety and the terroir they come from.
“Wine is a drink meant to be enjoyed, to be shared. If you take time and savor it, the wine will speak to you. It will tell you its history, where it comes from, the weather that shaped it, its grape variety, the land that saw it grow and become what you are now enjoying. It can be an experience that you will never forget.”
