Our Winery

The benchmark for white wines in Spain

Our wines, mostly Verdejo varietal, are leaders within white wine consumption in Spain. They also have a major influence in foreign markets and are available in more than fifty countries such as Japan, China, the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, or Mexico.

At present, Cuatro Rayas boasts about having modern facilities located in two wineries in the cradle of Verdejo, La Seca. The winery has been certified to the British Retail Consulting and IFS quality standards, essential for commercialisation in the European markets. These certifications confirm our keen interest to achieve excellent quality in every stage of the development of our products.

The weather and soil to make the best possible wine

Bodega Cuatro Rayas gathers vineyards from more than 300 winegrower members disseminated through almost 30 villages in the provinces of Valladolid and Segovia; a patchwork of plots, municipalities, and vineyard terrains that allow us to make a fairly comprehensive journey through the range and richness of soils and hillsides in our surrounding land. More than 2,400 vineyard hectares of different varieties—mainly Verdejo, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Palomino Fino, and Tempranillo—carefully controlled by the Technical Department of the winery over their entire vegetative cycle to get the best quality when the harvest comes.

Among our plots, we have a small portion of mostly pre-phylloxera and goblet-trained century-old vineyards; an area with a lower production level, which is manually harvested, and, with those exquisite grapes, we produce our most exclusive wines, such Cuatro Rayas Viñedos Centenarios, the Cuarenta Vendimias range, or Amador Diez.

Elena M. Oyagüe & Roberto L. Tello

Since the foundation of the winery in 1935, this wine project has teamwork as a base, a special bond between winegrowers, who take care of the grapes, and winemakers, who make those fruits to express their best features in the form of wine. Currently, Cuatro Rayas Winery has a Department of Oenology, in which two winemaker lovers stand out. They represent two generations and are the best example of professional collaboration, but above all, they love quality wines. Under the baton of Ángel Calleja –the first generation and for forty years the bulwark of Cuatro Rayas’ wine and Designation of Origin Rueda– there are Elena M. Oyagüe, technical manager who has dedicated two decades of her work to the winery, and Roberto L. Tello, who with only five years of work has already shown that new generations are starting strongly.

Calleja, master of masters, passed all his knowledge and secrets to the two younger winemakers who were called upon to receive the baton and take up the challenge of winemaking in one of the wineries with the most tradition in the D.O. Rueda. Each of them contributes with their view and work, focusing on making Cuatro Rayas’ wines to continue to bring joy to national and international consumers who are becoming even more demanding. These three generations work together to contribute with different points of view in a wide range of wines: Verdejo white wine, Tempranillo and Sauvignon red wines; young wines, aged on lees, oak barrel aged, solera and barrel fermented wines or low alcohol content frizzante wines. To produce this wide range of wines, all women and men who are part of the Cuatro Rayas Winery family are essential. Eighty percent of the wine produced in the winery is made with Verdejo variety.
