About the Winery

Convento San Francisco

The Convento San Francisco winery was founded in 1998. It is housed within the 13th century remains of the San Francisco convent in Penafiel at the heart of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Full advantage has been taken of old buildings that have stood the test of time, by renovating them to create century-old spaces for the production of fine wine. Full respect is given to the region’s ancient wine-making traditions while at the same time incorporating new technology into the production process. Starting from the principal that no two harvests are the same, we aim to interpret each harvest individually in order to achieve the best expression of the grapes. The result is pleasant wines with personality that are capable of satisfying experts as well as current-day lovers of fine wine.

Similar Wines

Convento San Francisco Crianza

The 2009 Convento San Francisco a pure Tempranillo aged for one year in French (70%) and American oak barrels, shows developed aromas, with mineral sensations even hinting on diesel notes, ripe fruit and a volatile hint lifting the nose up. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with good freshness, and the alcohol well-coated by the tannins that are firm but fine.

Convento San Francisco Reserva Especial

Convento San Francisco's 2005 Seleccion Especial is a blend of 90% Tinto del Pais and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines and aged for 16 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it delivers an already complex nose of sandalwood, mineral, espresso, pencil lead, blackberry, and licorice. Full-bodied, dense, and structured, this full-flavored effort requires 3-4 years of cellaring to unwind. Its drinking window will extend from 2013 to 2025.
